Bin schwer begeistert.

I fully support both of the previous comments: orb streaming quality is poor but I need something which is available to stream when I need it *NOT* waiting for a conversion which needs to be started manually first. So Sebastians proposal of AUTOMATIC conversion of files which pop up in defined folders would be a super solution: Offline conversion in good quality and availability of the stream when needed (i.e. I usually record the videos pre-scheduled through an EPG and there's enough time to convert immediately after recording finishs, but not when I'm about to stream them - this is particularly the case for the nightly news magazines).

So the feature of automatic conversion should not be a big thing and would be a great advantage.

Kind regards
Jeff

Hi there,

I suggest you add automatic conversion then of files that end up on a specific folder. You know... let's say I produce a video and the end result will be put into a folder when it's done - Air Video Server should check this folder and then automatically convert all those files into a playable format.

Because at the moment I don't see the added value of Air Video Server except streaming to the iPhone and what's the plus of that if you can only stream things that need to be converted in five to 90 minutes first, before you are able to watch anything? That's kinda useless. It needs to work instantly because I don't really encounter ANY situation where I "plan" on watching something I'm too lazy to get up and sit in front of my TV/Computer for. If I'm already too lazy I most certainly didn't plan ahead. The videos I want to see instantly I already watch before I go to bed, so what will be streamed to the iphone most likely is something that's left over/not that important or a movie that you pick out of your library - and you either have to convert ALL of your video into the right format to be able to browse it OR you stream it instantly.

And honestly I do get your point that Orb video looks shoddy but in those situations being able to watch it NOW instead of in 90 minutes is the key factor, not that it looks THAT good. The iPhone has a tiny screen, it's not perfect in the first place.

Hi there,

I suggest you add automatic conversion then of files that end up on a specific folder. You know… let’s say I produce a video and the end result will be put into a folder when it’s done – Air Video Server should check this folder and then automatically convert all those files into a playable format.

Hi,

I'm the developer of Air Video. I see there are comments about live conversion. Well, there is good reason why Air Video currently doesn't do it. It's simply not technically possible with iPhone media player component.

Orb does it by rewriting the media player from scratch but quite frankly the result is in my opinion quite poor. The quality is very low and the player can not leverage iPhone hardware video decoder which results in poor performance and reduced battery life.

So at this point I believe that offline conversion is superior in terms of playback quality and battery life even though it brings with it the necessity to convert entire video upfront. As far as the conversion is concerned, Air Video tries to make the process as painless as possible.
