Mit VLC kehrt ein großer Name und eine überflüssige Software zurück auf iOS (Download-Link). Zwei Jahre nach den Lizenzstreitereien, die mit einem App-Store-Rauswurf endeten, sind nicht nur die Themen Videocodec und Containerformat im Netz weitgehend ausgefochten (niemand mit Qualitätsanspruch benutzt mehr XviD und Co.), sondern es mangelt auch nicht mehr an Software-Alternativen, die selbst der aktuellen VLC-Version 2.0 auf iPhone und iPad den Rang ablaufen – angefangen bei Infuse.
Die tatsächlich faszinierende (und berichtenswerte) Wende in dieser Story, die die Auferstehung der App-Store-Version von VLC überhaupt ermöglicht, ist die Sisyphusarbeit von Jean-Baptiste Kempf, der sich um die Relizenzierung des Programmcodes kümmerte.

There are quite a few good reasons to do so, some more obvious than others, but notably competition, necessity to have more professional developers around VLC and AppStores. Other reasons also exist, but this is not the place and time to discuss those.
This is a crazy task, because every developer keeps all its rights, and VideoLAN has little rights on VLC. This involves contacting a few hundred developers, some who were active only 10 years ago, some with bouncing mails, and people spread across continents, countries, languages, OS…
