Apple TV 6.0
Ab iOS 7 richtet ein iPhone oder iPad den Apple TV automatisch ein. Die silberne Fernbedienung wird dadurch zwar nicht überflüssig, das erste Setup, von der Einrichtung des iTunes-Kontos bis zum WiFi-Knotenpunkt, erleichtert sich jedoch grundlegend.
Version 6.0 der Software für die Set-Top-Box erschien Freitag. Apple zog das Update, das in einzelnen Fällen fehlschlug und nur über einen iTunes-Restore wiederzubeleben war, am Wochenende jedoch zurück. Seit heute Morgen steht die Aktualisierung erneut zum regulären Download.
Die neue Version hält für US-Accounts iTunes Radio parat, sperrt Airfoil aus, bringt den Musik-Kauf-Store zurück, synct Podcasts mit der iPhone- und iPad-App (kostenlos; universal; App-Store-Link) und zeigt Fotos aus dem iCloud-Fotostream (Videos aber nur aus geteilten Alben).
AirPlay from iCloud ist derzeit nur für Länder interessant, die TV Serien und Filme über iTunes in the Cloud beziehen. Deutschland gehört weiterhin nicht dazu.
A blue AirPlay logo will be displayed on the iOS 7 device when AirPlay from iCloud is engaged. The user can still control playback as if the media was being streamed from the device, and album artwork and playback controls will be shown on the iOS lock screen in the same manner. The major advantage to this approach is an improvement in AirPlay playback performance by not passing the stream through the iOS device. Oddly, however, even though the Apple TV is actually streaming the content directly from iTunes in the Cloud, it remains somewhat dependent on the iOS device—for example if the device loses its connection or is rebooted, playback on the Apple TV will stop. That said, however, the user is otherwise free to use the iOS device otherwise normally.
Das Feature ermöglicht nicht nur den direkten Bezug der Filmdateien von den Cupertino-Servern, sondern authentifiziert auch eigene Käufe gegenüber fremden Apple TVs. So ist es möglich über sein iPad oder iPhone den Kinoabend auf einem Fernseher der Nachbar zu starten, ohne sich dort mit eigenen Account-Daten anzumelden.
