Unbefugte können auf diese Weise alle neuen Nachrichten abhören, die der Nutzer etwa über Messaging-Dienste wie WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger und andere Dritt-Apps erhalten hat – physischer Zugriff auf das iPhone ist dafür natürlich stets vorausgesetzt. It’s unlikely that the technology will reach an iPhone for at least three to five years, the people say. While the smartphone is Apple’s cash cow, there is precedent for new screen technologies showing up in the Apple Watch first. When it was introduced in 2014, the Apple Watch had an OLED screen.

Question: Since iOS 11 added screen recording, I often use this feature to show colleagues how to use apps and settings. Is there an app that will record a ‘touch effect’ to show where I’ve tapped the screen?

John: I don’t know of an app to help with this, but if you turn on Assistive Touch in the iOS Accessibility settings and record a custom tap gesture, that will show your taps during a screen recording. The process is a little cumbersome, but go to Settings ➝ General ➝ Accessibility and turn on Assistive Touch. At the bottom of the screen is an option to ‘Create New Gesture.’ Tap that, tap the screen once to record your single-tap gesture, and tap save. Name your gesture and save again. Now you can use the semi-transparent Assistive Touch icon at the bottom of the screen to access your custom gesture, which is available under the star icon. You have to enable your custom gesture each time you use a new app, but once you do so, any screen recording you make will also capture the little Assistive Touch disk as you tap on different parts of the screen.

Despite the monochrome colour palette, it is not dull. It’s beautiful. The Messages bubble is just sitting there with transparent sides with internal reflections that define cavities in the glass. The plus-minus stepper isn’t a uniform block of glass; the symbols engraved on top refract into the internal structure. The design is as abstract as ever and yet — at the same time — very relatable. I love it.

Now, it’s possible to see the use of depth, gloss and shadows and immediately make connection to real products. The iOS 7 sterile era of design is finally being washed away! Not so fast. Very rarely do invite graphics have anything to do with the product roadmap and I would not see this as a serious clue that major visual changes are mere months away.
