Freies WiFi in Kaffeehäusern, Hotels und öffentlichen Einrichtungen ist leider immer noch keine Selbstverständlichkeit; viel zu selten wird Internet als Basisdienstleistung – so wie Wasser und Strom – behandelt. In Deutschland fehlt obendrein eine garantierte Rechtssicherheit für Betreiber von offenen WiFi-Netzen. Das ist blamabel.

Speziell für (Flug-)Reisen in andere Länder hilft bei Ankunft und Abflug ein kostenloser und unkomplizierter Netzzugang um sich schnell zu orientieren. Das WiFox-Projekt von Anil Polat crowdsourced deshalb WiFi-Netze an Flughäfen – plus ihre Passwörter. Die Karte mit allen notwendigen Login-Informationen gibt es online und als iOS-App (universal; 1.99 €).

iOS-Entwickler bestimmen den (In‑App‑)Preis für ihre App-Store-Software aus festgesetzten Preisstufen – eine komplett freie Preisgestaltung ist nicht möglich. Diese vorgegebenen Preisstufen erhöht Apple in der nächsten Woche. Als Grund wurden Wechselkursentwicklungen genannt.

Das letzte Mal änderten sich die Euro-App-Store-Preise vor zweieinhalb Jahren. Ausgenommen von der anstehenden Preiserhöhung sich (App‑)Abos, die sich automatisch verlängern.

Der offizielle Support-Zeitraum für das Lumia 535, das im November 2014 erschien, beträgt damit zweieinhalb Jahre. Zum Vergleich: Das derzeit älteste Apple Telefon, das noch mit der aktuellsten iOS-Version läuft, ist das iPhone 5. Es erschien im September 2012 und ist inzwischen viereinhalb Jahre alt.

Überraschend ist das frühe Update-Ende nicht: Das von Nokia übernommene Feature-Phone-Geschäft hat Microsoft inzwischen verkauft und lediglich noch „Support“ für die Lumias angekündigt. Windows Phone, das Betriebssystem, verliert selbst im niedrigen einstelligen Prozentbereich weiter an Marktanteil.

Yesterday, we released an update to PhotoScan, an app for iOS and Android that allows you to digitize photo prints with just a smartphone. One of the key features of PhotoScan is the ability to remove glare from prints, which are often glossy and reflective, as are the plastic album pages or glass-covered picture frames that host them. To create this feature, we developed a unique blend of computer vision and image processing techniques that can carefully align and combine several slightly different pictures of a print to separate the glare from the image underneath.

Wer heutzutage analoge Fotos digitalisieren will, beispielsweise mit Google PhotoScan (Laden), besitzt mit einem Smartphone (in den meisten Fällen) bereits den besten Scanner.

Im zehnten iPhone-Jahr ist Apple in puncto ‚Single Core‘-CPU-Performance mindestens ein Jahr der Konkurrenz voraus. Im ‚Multi-Core‘-Vergleich liegen sie mit dem iPhone 7 (Plus) gleich auf.

Doch Benchmarks sind seit jeher nur eine eingeschränkt hilfreiche Vergleichsgröße. Apple hat in den letzten Jahren ein gutes Händchen darin bewiesen welche Hardware-Komponenten (für sie) zukünftig wichtig sind. Diese Bauteile kauft Apple nicht mehr von der Stange, sondern baut (beziehungsweise designt) sie selbst.

It’s not that Apple wants to make every component inside every device but it feels very much like Apple wants to own every component that makes a real, palpable, differentiated experience for customers.

Als nächster potenzieller Meilenstein steht ein eigener Grafikprozessor für das iPhone und iPad an.

Mir ist absolut unverständlich wie Apple die Mini-Provisionen der Affiliate-Links, eine etablierte Alternative zu klassischer Bannerwerbung (die sie nun wirklich nicht mögen), zusammenstreicht.

Anstelle ausgewählter zu überprüfen wer sich beim Affiliate-Programm anmeldet (um hier gleich auszusortieren), dezimiert Apple durch eine generelle Kürzung auch die Einnahmen von kleinen Entwicklerstudios, unabhängigen Blogs und Podcasts.

Es ist damit eine Entscheidung, die der Auffindbarkeit guter Apps komplett entgegenläuft.
