In der Beta von iOS 14.2 bekommt die Lupe (➞ Einstellungen ➞ Bedienungshilfen) auf iPhones und iPads mit LiDAR-Scanner eine Erkennung von Personen.
The purpose of People Detection is to aid blind and low vision users in navigation; this type of application is particularly well-suited for the LiDAR sensor in iPhone 12 Pro. The goal is to help the visually impaired understand their surroundings—examples include knowing how many people there are in the checkout line at the grocery store, how close one is standing to the end of the platform at the subway station, and finding an empty seat at a table. Another use case is in this era of social distancing; the software can tell you if you’re within six feet of another person in order to maintain courtesy and safety.

Nicht unbedingt weil das Telefon technisch dazu in der Lage ist, sondern weil Apple einen Workflow drumherum baut – von einer Abwärtskompatibilität bis zum Schnitt.
Apple and Dolby have done something very smart to ensure long-term compatibility at the cost of some short-term incompatibility.
Dolby Vision and the rival HDR10 format are what’s called perceptual quantizer (PQ) HDR systems. And PQ systems are not backwards compatible with SDR displays, meaning Dolby Vision video has only been compatible with Dolby Vision displays. (Playing a Dolby Vision video on a non-Dolby Vision display would look completely wrong.) If you wanted to watch a Dolby Vision video on a regular display, you would have to re-encode it into SDR — basically, make an entirely new video file.
But the iPhone 12 shoots video in a newer version of Dolby Vision called Profile 8.4 that’s built on a standard called HLG, or hybrid log-gamma. HLG works differently than PQ systems; it was developed by broadcasters like the BBC and NHK to be backwards compatible with SDR displays so they would only have to broadcast one video stream.
All this means that an iPhone 12 HDR video is a 10-bit HLG file with additional Dolby Vision metadata on top, and it will happily play back as SDR on SDR displays, HLG on HLG displays, and Dolby Vision on Dolby Vision displays that support Profile 8.4. And iOS 14 is smart enough to know when the apps and devices you’re sharing video to don’t support this new format, and it’ll make sure you send something that works. It is all very clever, even though, in practice, what it means is you’re mostly sharing SDR video.

(Video‑)Plattformen wie YouTube stehen nun vor einer Schwemme von neuen Video-Uploads in HDR und damit vor einer vergleichbaren Aufgabe.
Der Preisvorteil von Apple One verpufft, sobald man auf einen einzigen Apple Service verzichtet (beziehungsweise ihn günstiger oder vorübergehend kostenlos bekommt).
Zahlt man beispielsweise für das preiswertere Apple-Music-Studenten-Abo, lohnt sich das Bundle schon nicht mehr. Obendrein ist in diesem Studenten-Abo auch Apple TV+ kostenlos inbegriffen.
Viele Apple TV+-Abonnenten dürften sich zwecks der Promo noch im ersten (verlängerten) Gratisjahr befinden. Wenn man den Jahresbetrag von 50Euro rausrechnet, dezimiert das ebenso die Einsparung, die das Bundle verspricht. Und das Angebot für ein kostenloses Jahr Apple TV+ ist noch nicht vorbei: Wer heute ein neues iPad kauft, bekommt Apple TV+ für 12 Monate kostenlos.
Randnotiz: Apple TV+ war für mich in seinem ersten Jahr übrigens ein Hit. Diese Serien und Filme fand ich bis jetzt unterhaltsam: Little Amerika, die Beastie Boys Story, Tehran, Long Way Up, The Morning Show, Tiny World, Trying, Mystic Quest, Greyhound und Ted Lasso.
Auch Apple Arcade lässt sich günstiger zum Jahrespreis buchen. Anstelle von zwölf Monaten zahlt man so nur zehn Monate. Der Katalog umfasst aktuell 144 Spiele.
Apple Music ist grundsätzlich nicht besser oder schlechter als Spotify. Allerdings profitiert der Musikstreaming-Service von der Integration in Apples Ökosystem. Außerdem ist mir Apple Music sympathischer, weil Joe Rogan dort nicht gefährlichen Menschen eine Plattform bieten darf.
News+ und Fitness+ sind hierzulande noch nicht erhältlich. So entfällt auch das „Premier“-Paket1 von Apple One. Es bietet nicht nur die potenziell größte Preisersparnis, sondern auch die Möglichkeit mehr Geld für mehr iCloud-Speicherplatz auszugeben („If you subscribe to Apple One and use a different Apple ID for iCloud storage“).
Im Moment lassen sich maximal 2.2 TB buchen (200 GB von „Apple One Familie“ + 2 TB separat). Außerdem ist es möglich 400 GB als iCloud-Speicherplatz zu abonnieren (200 GB von „Apple One Familie“ + 200 GB separat), den Apple nicht individuell anbietet.
Unterm Strich steht: Wer für Apple Music (Family), Apple TV+, Apple Arcade und iCloud-Speicherplatz (50 / 200 GB) den Vollpreis zahlt, spart mit dem neuen Bundle (das ihr unter ➞ Einstellungen ➞ Apple ID ➞ Abonnements oder App Store ➞ Account ➞ Abonnements findet). Sobald euch einer der Dienste jedoch nicht interessiert (oder ihr ihn noch nicht bezahlt), schwindet der Preisvorteil von Apple One.

Meine Laufstatistik verrät: Die Skate(-board)-Session ist vorbei.
Tempo ist ein aufgeräumtes Dashboard für meinen Laufsport, das mir nicht gleichzeitig auch Schuhe verkaufen will (Adidas Runtastic / Nike Training Club) oder eine Community aufs Auge drückt (Strava). Es verarbeitet Daten direkt aus HealthKit und braucht kein separates Nutzerkonto. So kann ich frei wählen mit welcher App ich meine Läufe erfasse. Meistens entscheide ich mich für Apples Workout-App auf der Apple Watch.
Tempo bietet eine Komplikation für diese Uhr und lässt mich auf dem iPhone ein Widget setzen. Ich sehe diese Daten weniger als eine (rückblickende) Analyse, sondern vielmehr als Motivation für den nächsten Lauf – obwohl alle diese Informationen detailliert vorliegen!
Und Tempo wertet nicht nur Dauerläufe aus, sondern schaut auch über eure Spaziergänge. Und solltet ihr verpasst haben ein Training aufzuzeichnen, schreibt Tempo es nachträglich in die Health-Datenbank.
Apropos Fotos: Darkroom ist meine erste Wahl für eine Bildbearbeitung auf dem iPad, aber Lightroom erhielt neben seiner exzellenten Rauschreduzierung nun noch ein zweites (faszinierendes) Feature. Color Grading klickt für mich, weil ich es (wahrscheinlich) von Videos kenne.
If you’ve never used Split Toning or Color Grading, here’s the idea: you can apply a color tint to your image based on the brightness of the pixels: Lighter pixels can be tinted differently from darker ones. With Color Grading, you can also control your midtones.
This is not new to digital imaging; toning and split toning are traditional darkroom techniques. Toning used to be done by bleaching your prints and then applying a toner; different looks can be achieved by how you apply the bleach. The digital version is easier — if for no other reason than the fact that you can change the toning without making another print — and definitely less smelly!
„Geheimtipp” ist ein großes Wort, aber HashPhotos fällt für mich schon seit ein paar Jahren in diese Kategorie. Es stellt euch nicht nur zwei Bilder gegenüber, die ihr miteinander vergleichen wollt („Compare and Pick”), sondern listet euch auch Duplikate auf. Vielleicht wollt ihr doppelte Fotos aussortieren, aber nicht gleich vollautomatisiert Gemini Photos durch eure Mediathek fegen lassen.
HashPhotos filtert nach Schlagwörtern oder Dateitypen. Mit einem einzigen Fingerzeig sortiere ich so beispielsweise alle RAW-Fotos aus meiner iCloud-Fotomediathek. Die App ändert mir in einem Rutsch die Orts- und Zeitdaten für mehrere Bilder oder erstellt eine Kollektion aus Fotos um verschiedene Aufnahmen nebeneinander zu halten.
Über die Sync- und Transfer-Features, sowie die Möglichkeit seine Bibliothek zu sortieren und Fotos zu konvertieren, kann man im Guide nachlesen.
iPadOS flog in diesem Jahr tief unter dem Radar der medialen Berichterstattung. Verwunderlich ist das nicht: Es fehlen Tablet-exklusive Features, die das Betriebssystem ins grelle Rampenlicht zerren.
Mit Version 14 von iPadOS trifft Apple jedoch hinter der Kulisse eine Handvoll grundsätzlicher Entscheidungen für die nächsten Jahre – von Sidebars über Toolbars bis zum Apple Pencil.
