Apples mobile Videobearbeitungs-Software iMovie steht für 3.99 € am heutigen Morgen im App Store zum Download bereit. Im gleichem Atemzug veröffentlichte Cupertino ein „Frequently Asked Questions“-Dokument, welches noch einmal bestätigt, das iMovie nur auf einem iPhone 4 funktioniert. Gegenüber den Geräten der letzten Generation sowie dem iPad, ist dieser Umstand wohl dem verdoppelten Arbeitsspeicher zuzuschreiben.

Heimproduktionen wie die unten eingebettete, sollten in den nächsten Tagen die Internet-Portale fluten. Im letzten Jahr, als mit dem iPhone 3GS die Video-Aufnahmemöglichkeit und der mobile YouTube-Upload ins Gerät wanderten, stieg die Anzahl, der von Unterwegs hochgeladenen Filme, um 400-Prozent. Während die Telekom in Berlin dieser Minuten ihre ersten iPhone-4-Vertragsgeräte an den Mann und die Frau bringt, informiert Cupertino über die verzögerte Verfügbarkeit der weißen Modelle. Diese sollen eine „besondere Herausforderung“ in der Produktion darstellen und werden erst in der zweiten Juli-Hälfte in den Vertrieb gelangen.

Engadgets Chefredakteur Joshua Topolsky zeigt in seinem iPhone-4-Review einen FaceTime-Videoanruf mit Ed Baig (USA Today). Unklar bleibt jedoch weiterhin, ob die Gespräche, die ausschließlich über eine WiFi-Verbindung geführt werden, eine Mobilfunk-Anbindung (beispielsweise für die Authentifizierung) voraussetzen.

Auf der WWDC-Keynote verkündete Steve Jobs, dass man seit Beginn des App Stores bereits eine Milliarde US-Dollar an die iOS-Entwickler ausgeschüttet hätte. Die Anzahl der Download von bezahlten und unbezahlten Anwendungen soll nach Apple-Angaben bei fünf Milliarden liegen – eine Unterscheidung legt Cupertino weiterhin nicht offen.

Mit diesen Angaben im Rücken, ‚kalkuliert‘ Gene Munster von der Investmentbank Piper Jaffray einen geschätzten Apple-Profit vom App Store mit ‚lediglich‘ $189 Millionen US-Dollar über den gesamten Zeitraum.

So while App Store sales are through the roof, Apple’s certainly not making a killing from them. But that’s never been the point, anyway. Like iTunes itself, the App Store’s purpose is to drive hardware sales. It’s a secondary business.

Apple räumte auf der diesjährigen WWDC-Keynote dem hochauflösenden Retina-Display großen Präsentationsplatz ein. Schenkt man der ersten ‚Hands-On‚-Berichterstattung Glauben, geschah dies wohl zurecht.

Neben der hochgestuften 960 x 640-Auflösung des IPS-Bildschirms, erwähnen fast alle Presse-Berichte einen ‚Crash-Test‘. Ed Baig schrieb für USA Today: „To reinforce the point, an Apple executive dropped it in front of me. The phone was undamaged.“. Walt Mossberg kommentiert: „I dropped it several times from a few feet onto a hard surface with no problem, and it acquired no scratches at all in my testing, even though I didn’t use a case or coddle it.“

Bemerkenswert. Der ‚iFixit-Teardown‚ vermutet chemisch-gestärktes ‚Gorilla Glass‚ der US-Firma Corning. Apple hält sich mit solch spezifischen Angaben wie gewohnt zurück – entsprechende „Stress-Tests“ finden sich seit Anfang des Jahres auf YouTube.

Bemühungen in diesem Bereich entsprechen absolut der Apple-Philosophie. Dokumentierte Imperfektion, die gebrochene, zerkratzte oder verschmierte iPhone-Displays zeigt, geht Apple ohne Frage auf den Senkel. Das neue Glas ist eine logische Weiterentwicklung der fettabweisenden iPhone 3GS- und iPad-Beschichtung („Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating“). Die ‚oleophobe‚ Oberfläche findet beim iPhone 4 sowohl auf der Vorder- als auch Rückseite Anwendung. Ob sie die Erwartungen erfüllt, erfahren wir nach einem breiten Massentest, erst in den nächsten Wochen.

Besondere Beachtung fand ebenfalls die verbaute HD-Kamera (5 MP / 720p-Video mit 30 FPS), von dessen Qualität wir uns jedoch bereits am morgigen Donnerstag überzeugen lassen dürfen.

In der gestrigen Nacht fiel das Presse-Embargo für die ersten iPhone 4-Reviews der ‚üblichen Verdächtigen‘. Die Quintessenz der Artikel soll kurz herausgestellt werden.

Engadget – Joshua Topolsky

• Apple seems to have completely rethought its strategy on how the phone should look and feel, and the results are nothing if not striking.
• Jony Ive and his team have reset what we expect in an iPhone, coming up with something that clearly harkens back to the retro-future Braun designs of Dieter Rams.

• Once my hand got used to it, the 3GS body felt more like a toy, and I didn’t much feel like holding it anymore.
• With very heavy video recording and playback, instant messaging, email and data tethering over 3G, I got a full day of battery life.

• AT&T still sucks, and the best engineering out of Cupertino won’t change that.

• The new iPhone 4 I’ve been testing for about a week and a half — along with the major refresh of the mobile operating system software at the core of recent models — demonstrates once again why Apple’s handset is the one to beat, even as it faces fierce competition from phones based on Google’s Android platform, among others.
• Apple says the glass is chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic. To reinforce the point, an Apple executive dropped it in front of me. The phone was undamaged.

• The most important downside of the iPhone 4 is that, in the U.S., it’s shackled to AT&T, which not only still operates a network that has trouble connecting and maintaining calls in many cities, but now has abandoned unlimited, flat-rate data plans. Apple needs a second network.

‚The Boy Genius Report‘ hat zusätzlich eine umfangreiche Bildergalerie. Die Jungs von iFixit attestieren in ihrem „Teardown“ die vermuteten 512 MB-Arbeitsspeicher.

Überall sprießen Test-Videos der iPhone 4-Kamera aus dem Boden. Ich kann die bewegten Bilder im Engadget-Artikel empfehlen, der in diesem Jahr für mich die beste Zusammenfassung liefert.

Das Dev-Team veröffentlicht mit dem PwnageTool 4.0 die Jailbreak-Lösung für das iPhone 3GS sowie den iPod touch der zweiten Generation auch unter der neusten Apple-Firmware. Beide Geräte müssen für eine erfolgreiche Freischaltung das alte Bootrom aufweisen.

Mit dem am gestrigen Montag veröffentlichten ‚ultrasn0w‚-Unlock lässt sich auch das iPhone 3GS (Non MC-Modell) für alle Mobilfunkanbieter freischalten.
